Choosing the right shade of Grey laminate flooring.

“Greige” – Grey is the new beige and the most commonly requested colour from clients. Grey has not only replaced beige as being the “It” neutral, but greys are now synonymous with style, sophistication and glamour. Read on for some hints on picking a great grey laminate flooring for your space.

However when choosing the right shade of grey there are two important considerations to take into account:

1. the undertones that it contains
2. the lightness/darkness of the shade.

UNDERTONES

Grey contains one of three undertones namely purple, green or blue.

• Green based greys generally appear the most neutral, are easy to live with and complement a wide range of wood tones and other colors.
• Blue based greys are the coolest, and almost have a steel-like appearance to them. Most people go to these first. We recommend that you prevent your room from becoming too cold, with the addition of warm and natural woods, warm metals, and additional warm colors.
• Purple based greys are the ones most difficult to work with as most furnishings and woods contain orange or red tones, and they clash with the purple.

The most common way to classify grey is by cool and warm.

• Cool greys work best in a room that receives direct sunlight during the period you will be using it.The lighter cool greys are more forgiving than the darker cool greys.
• Warm greys is a grey with a little brown in it. Warm greys are welcoming and cozy.

Floor selection

1. Choose a solid, hard floor surface instead of carpets. Carpets can contain a variety of nasty chemicals and trap pollutants in your home. Hard surface flooring is the best bet for those with allergies and asthma, because it’s easy to sweep and mop, and it doesn’t attract dust mites or mould.
2. Make sure the floor you choose is formaldehyde free or has no added formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and serious home air pollutant.
3. A good formaldehyde free choice would be floating laminate flooring that won’t require any adhesive. Pick a laminate printed with water-based inks containing no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Makes sure they are manufactured with non-VOCs and iso-cyanine free glue. Note: Most laminate (with more than 0.01 parts per million) of urea-formaldehyde are usually inexpensive with toxic resins used as the binder. Look for these words; NAF (no added formaldehyde), NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde), or ULEF (ultra low-emitting formaldehyde)
4. If you choose vinyl flooring make sure you select vinyl tile that has a click system installation method and is virgin vinyl is manufactured from of virgin materials.
5. With real hardwood flooring, you know exactly what you are getting, solid wood all the way through the plank and it’s easy to install without adhesives. It’s naturally sustainable and formaldehyde-free.

Floor installation

When installing flooring, make sure you select products that use a nail-down or interlocking click system instead of glue. The click installation uses no harmful VOC emitting glue and is safer for your family. VOC ‘s lower the indoor air quality.

Or if you have chosen solid wood, make sure to select low-VOC wood stains. Seal with water-based finishes or choose a pre-finished floor.

Maintenance and care

Dirt can stain and scratch the surface finish, so, use a good walk on/off mat, plus regular vacuuming or damp mopping is important. Never leave the floor wet and clean up spills promptly because water can damage the surface, as can harsh cleaners. Choose a floor that offers easy maintenance with little use of chemical cleaners, remember not to leave any residue on the floor surface, this acts as a dirt catcher.

What is the difference between clear and rustic grade Oak?

Oak is widely considered to be the finest available wood worldwide due to it’s attractive colouring, figuring and durability properties. Selection of grade is purely an aesthetic preference.

FinOak floors are available in Clear and Rustic grades, all of which feature boards that are carefully hand graded and selected to your specification, as outlined below;

• Rustic Grade

These planks are manufactured from the outer parts of a timber plank or trunk, where branches would attach to the tree. When the plank is sawn you see knots, where the branches would have been. There is also more variation in the timbers colour. Visible knots then get filled and sanded to complement the natural figuring and colour of the boards. This is the perfect choice if you are looking for some character.

• Clear Grade

The clear grade also known as premium grade is the timber that is in the core of the tree. When the tree is felled there are fewer pieces of premium / classic grade available so it is therefore more expensive. Each board has been carefully selected to ensure that the beautiful figuring of the wood is highlighted but no knots are present in clear grade wooden flooring.
