Hard wood cladding is a valuable and timeless addition to your environment – it adds a natural quality and a luxurious appeal to your home or office. But solid wood can come at quite a cost, both to your pocket and to the environment so a more affordable and eco-friendly approach would be to install engineered wood flooring panels to clad your walls. Engineered hardwood cladding is a fantastic alternative to solid hardwood cladding because it has more dimensional strength and it is very difficult to distinguish between the two once they have been installed.

Engineered wood cladding provides better stability and is constructed with a 3-ply or multi-ply wood base to ensure that it is more resistant to variations in temperature and moisture. The top layer of hardwood is made from real, solid wood and runs perpendicular to the 3-ply or multi-ply base, which creates the strength and stability by allowing it to react to changes in temperature and humidity. Because engineered hardwood flooring is dimensionally stable, it also means that it can be installed in a number of different ways, including: nailed or screwed down, glued down using flexible flooring adhesive or floated over an underlay, although for cladding a wall or ceiling the floating option would not work. In this case, the engineered wood would need to be fixed down with glue or nails.

The main advantages of engineered hardwood cladding are the facts that it is:

• Less costly than solid hardwood flooring
• Difficult to tell apart from solid wood cladding once installed
• Unlike laminate flooring, has a real layer of wood on top
• More resistant to fluctuations in temperature and humidity than solid wood cladding
• Installed using click-fitting system, making it quick and easy to install
• Available in different colours and finishes
• The top layer can be sanded and re-finished if necessary

Dark wood – such as espresso, dark walnut and ebony – have been trending for a while now and are not showing any signs of slowing down in the South African market. Important to note, however, are the largely absent warm undertones of these dark hues. Dark wood has been criticised for being difficult to maintain since scratches can appear more prominent on a dark surface. In order to protect your dark floors from scratching you can choose a low sheen because high sheen reflects more light and shows up dirt, scratches and indentations. Take your shoes off to protect your floors from dirt and tiny pebbles trapped in the soles of your shoes and use felt pads underneath your furniture. To clean your floors, use a micro-fibre mop, as regular brooms can easily scratch floors and make use of area rugs on high trafficked footpaths, for instance, down corridors. By following these steps, you can keep your dark wood floors in tip-top shape for many years to come.

What is the difference between clear and rustic grade Oak?

Oak is widely considered to be the finest available wood worldwide due to it’s attractive colouring, figuring and durability properties. Selection of grade is purely an aesthetic preference.

FinOak floors are available in Clear and Rustic grades, all of which feature boards that are carefully hand graded and selected to your specification, as outlined below;

• Rustic Grade

These planks are manufactured from the outer parts of a timber plank or trunk, where branches would attach to the tree. When the plank is sawn you see knots, where the branches would have been. There is also more variation in the timbers colour. Visible knots then get filled and sanded to complement the natural figuring and colour of the boards. This is the perfect choice if you are looking for some character.

• Clear Grade

The clear grade also known as premium grade is the timber that is in the core of the tree. When the tree is felled there are fewer pieces of premium / classic grade available so it is therefore more expensive. Each board has been carefully selected to ensure that the beautiful figuring of the wood is highlighted but no knots are present in clear grade wooden flooring.
Clean, contemporary and incredibly stylish you cant go wrong with wooden flooring for domestic of commercial purposes.
